第一個空格可以填to go或是go
第二個的話是hope
所以答案只能選c

這是do當助動詞使用時的句型用法

引文:
這是do當助動詞使用時的句型用法

Here,'do' is a transitive verb.

All I could do was......
= All that I could do was......
‘that I could do' is a relative pronoun clause functioning as an adjective clause to modify the antecedent‘all’
In the clause‘that I could do',‘do’is a transitive verb with‘that’(or all) being its object.
The subject of the main clause is‘all', and‘go...’or‘to go...’is the subject complement (Both 'go’and‘to go’can be the correct answers here).
Actually,‘go’is a form of infinitive, that is, an infinitive without‘to’.
For this special sentence pattern (all one could do is + V or to V), it seems customary to use an infinitive without ‘to’, though using an infinitive with‘to’is also grammatically correct.

以下出自"Practical English Usage" by M.S., 3rd edition, 130 cleft sentences(註一), 130.5 other structures

"....
All (that), and expressions with thing, can be used in cleft sentences.

All I want is a home somewhere.
All you need is love.
All (that) I did was (to) touch the window, and it broke.

The only thing I remember is a terrible pain in my head.

- Mary kept a pig in the garden shed. 這句話很平常,沒什麼特別,但是如果我要強調是"Mary"而不是其他人的話:

Mary was the person who kept a pig in the garden shed. 這是把要強調的Mary放在前頭的用法,然後 the person who 就是告知讀者前頭的主詞就是我要強調的。

The person who kept a pig in the garden shed was Mary. 這是把要強調的Mary放在最後的寫法。

"cleft sentences"可以用的基本句型很多,前頭的All (that) .... 也是其中一個。

以原來的問題來說:
All I could do was ( go to bed) and ( hope that I felt better the next day).

這整句是要強調兩件事(括弧部份),而不是要強調開頭當作主詞的All。

My reference books:
World talk: Dancing with English – A Book of Comprehensive Grammar
我的是中譯本,中文書名翻做: 英文文法全書, 2005年1月

在Unit 3, Part 5的關代Relative Pronoun章節中的P.139提到:
anything, something,………all,和 the only thing,這些詞後面需要用that引導的附屬子句………
照抄其例句:
All (that) Matt Mutt could do was say his prayers with his eyes shut.
= What Matt Mutt could do was say his prayers with his eyes shut.
(例句照抄)

既然that Matt Mutt could do是關代子句, 那麼that在子句Matt Mutt could do中應該是個主詞或受詞,而子句中已有主詞Matt Mutt, 所以that是受詞 即Matt Mutt could do that (or all). 所以do是及物動詞.

另外以前在教我小孩讀英文時,書上也有提到. 找了好久,終於找到.
新無敵 國中英語參考書語第6冊P23提到:
有關All that we did was prepare for Chinese New Year. 書上有8點說明,我摘錄其中幾點如下:
*本句型的主詞是All, 動詞是was, 後面接主詞補語(to) prepare for…….
*本句型中關係代名詞 that在關係子句裡做did的受格,故可省略.
*本句型的主詞補語為不定詞to prepare, to在本句中可省略.

Sorry, I am not an English expert, so I don’t have world-class grammar books available.
All I have is the above-mentioned books.
For your reference only!!

Aha, what you said is right. It is not much of a truly comprehensive grammar book, or maybe we can just say it’s relatively comprehensive merely for those who begin to learn English. And what grammar books are the best? Undoubtedly, World-class grammar books with great reputation are the best, I think. There are quite a few English experts on this website, and they are certain to know the titles of those famous grammar books. They will tell you, I bet.

But why don’t I buy that kind of grammar books to read? Ha-ha, tell you why, my English is not good enough and I am kinda lazy, so I am afraid reading an original English grammar book would taper my drive to read. That means I don’t have adequate patience to read original English grammar books. I would rather read general English articles and practice my writing and speaking skills.

And what grammar books, on earth, are suitable for you? I think it depends on the goal in your mind. You wanna learn the truly comprehensive grammar, or just the basic one? But you know a person with ambition to read a truly comprehensive one is not allowed to be stunned by however thick that book is. Have you ever seen a comprehensive grammar book which is thin and small?

Besides, how is your command of English? If you can read original English books readily, don’t hesitate and just get one. That’s your best choice! But if your English proficiency is about the level of mine, maybe a grammar book in Chinese version would benefit you most. Finally, please bear in mind that, whatever book you decide to read, grammar is just a tool for learning English. In my own opinion, being immersed in grammar would occupy too much of our time for learning other more useful English skills, such as reading, writing, and even speaking.

Hope these words would help.

Looking at my watch, i can show you the evidence that my English is really so-so because it took me 1.5 hours to complete this post. Hope I will grow to improve my writing in the future.
Let's learn and move on together!!
