I memorize words for learning English , and made some problems with reading/writing.

If the one sentence consist of too many many words.Even each word I knew, I won't read it , because I can't integrate those words in my head.

When writing , I never know words which one should be use in where and when are right . And how to expess what do I say in English ?

What should I solve such problem with?

I don't know how much wrong in above.
If no one could understands, pls delete it.

Dear Qazw,

These problems are commonly faced by English learners. It is quite ineffective and time consuming when you try to check every unknown word in the sentence/paragraph you are reading. When you are reading, you should focus on getting the meaning of the piece you are reading rather than learning every word, right?

As you have pointed out, when you check every unknown word, you tend to forget to read the whole sentence, and you wouldn't know how to use those new words in your writing. Perhaps you should try to stop checking for the meaning of every word and just enjoy reading. As long as you can understand what the article or paragraph is about, that is good enough.

In terms of writing, it takes a long time to build up the writing skills and styles. If you keep reading novels/articles, slowly your writing will improve. It might not work as a wonder drug immediately, but your word base will get bigger gradually, and you will be able to apply those words you know in your writing.

All I can say is...keep up the good work, keep reading, keep writing, and you will get there eventually.

Happy learning!

Qazw,

When you wanna lean a word, never just memorize that single word. It's better to learn the use or expression of that word. There are at least two advantages if you practice so. Firstly, you can remember that word for longer time. Secondly, but more importantly, when you really want to use it either in spoken or in written form, you won't express it incorrectly.

And what's more, for English-as-a-foreign-langue learners like us, basic grammar is a must-have. It can help you write or speak correct sentences. Otherwise, you will possibly be lost in the "English woods".

Don't feel frustrated or depressed because there are no shortcuts to learning English indeed. Just study English step by step, and you'll learn it little by little, I bet.

I memorize English vocabularies for learning English. But, I have difficulties at reading and also writing English. If one sentence consists of too many words, I will not read it because I am not able to integrate those known words all together with my brain.

When I am writing, I never know which word should be used or put into the correct grammar. Also, I don’t know how to express myself by speaking English.

What method should I use to solve such problem?

QAZW:
Hi. The above article is the revise.
You are doing a great job now. Also, changing attitude in learning English might be a good method. For example, you can choose English articles or English movies that you are interested in. Learning is parts of your life. Why dont you make it interesting?

Best Regards,

Dear Qazw,

What you can try is to read a few sentences or a paragraph first without checking for words you don't understand first. If you understand what it is saying, then move on to the next few sentences or the next paragraph. If you really cannot understand at all, then you can start to check for the meaning of those vital words, like the verb, the subject...etc. In addition, when you are checking for the meaning of those words, it is better to use English-English dictionary than English-Chinese dictionary. It might be hard initially, but it is a good way to learn the english expression of those words and there are a lot of examples of usage in a good English-English dictionary.

It is quite hard to explain how to do it, let me use an example. I just finished a novel yesterday, and of course I didin't know many words in that novel, but the point is to understand what the novel is talking about, which is unlikely to be represented by a few sentences, but by a few thousand sentences. So if I check for every word that I don't know, it will take at least a month or two to finish the novel (it is 560 pages long). So what I did was just reading through, and I did understand what the book is talking about, that is the whole point of reading the book, right?

I once was like you, checking for the meaning of every word on the text book that I didn't know, but soon I realised that it isn't the way to go forward since it took too much of my time. Maybe you can try different methods and determine which one is the best way for you.

Happy learning
