I looked up "默契" in Dr.eye and found the following :

1.to agree by implication
2.an unvoiced pact; a tacit understanding (or agreement); an unspoken consensus

Therefore my try is "We do have a tacit understanding!".
Somehow it's unnatural to me. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Roland

I think the word "understanding" when used as a noun usually referrs to things (ie, my understanding on the subject is minimal), not so much the "connection" between people. Just my 2 cents...

NO, tacit understanding is exactly right, it's absolutely natural, correct, and common. I usually say tacit understanding or unspoken agreement

For "tacit understanding" per se, I feel it is ok. The point depends on how we interpret the "默契" either in English or Chinese. It is not a matter of right or wrong, I think.

yeah, I've heard and used "tacit understanding" like a million times when I'm around Westerners(99% of my friends). So, I don't know what's the issue here.

“Oh my God! We have(We've reached) tacit understanding(unspoken agreement)! Our backpacks are identical!”

“Tacit understanding”

http://www.buddhistnetwork.org/articles/article_55.html
The Buddha Repentance is a repentance to purify the transgressions of body, speech and mind. It is based on Buddha Sutra, a spontaneous revelation of Living Buddha Lian Sheng. This sutra was his heart-light emanation and it was conceived through his spontaneous insight and tacit understanding.

http://www.taiwandc.org/wsj-2005-02.htm
That's because it undermines the tacit understanding the two countries have long shared over Taiwan,...

Well, diyang, you've got some sense of humour about this one. I mean, seriously, u pulling my leg? I would never say it this way in such situation. For your number one and two, I'd just say it's a private pact between the two, and tacit understanding or unspoken agreement for the second. You told me u rarely heard about the use of "tacit understanding," well, I'm extremely surprised to know this because I've heard it used a trillion times, not mentioning the ones I've read( yeah, I read tons of books), judging by your level, I'm still convinced that you've heard or at leat read it a few hundred times if you're in the States. Once I'd broken through a critical point in my English, I somehow was able to instinctively filter out uncommon and unnatural usages of the language. Just like the discussion that I took part earlier about the "non-identical' twins. Well, I knew off the top of my head what could've been said to sound natural, and it was the everybody-knew-already "fraternal twins." diyang, u don't need to trust my experience or anything. Oh, yeah, it's very easy to see me falter in my own indecision about something I ain't sure of, but for the ones that are common, instinctive, or well read, I just know it from the bottom of my heart and I'm standing firm on this one. cheers (P.S Diyang, I'd rather you type in English because it's a headache for me to read Chinese, well u only need to do this if u wanna address to my attention)

Peter,

Thank god I didn't read your last post, otherwise.. Well, I'm still a learner, make mistakes constantly and the total "books" I've read so far (other than technical/school books) are less than 10.

前頭所舉的中翻英例子背景是設定在台灣,所以那些例子你沒聽過(I wrote "讀起來真的很奇怪", so you shouldn't have heard of that made-up English sentence). Of course, I didn't grow up in the US or in an English environment, so I could only use my imagination to come up with a scenario like that. Unless little girls here do say "tacit understanding" in that setting, then I'm really wrong.

Now we have 'un-tacit'[sic] understaning( :) ), let me just say it's good to have you here. :)

This guy needs to pull the stick out of his butt, and get over himself.

I was born and raised in Texas, and I rarely hear this pharse "tacit understanding" in my hood. Even in the Navy, I get to work with people from all over the country, you have better chance to win the lottery than catching pharses like "tacit understanding".

And lastly, paragraph is you best friend. Wall of text just melted whatever point you are trying to make, nerdy.

edited out the profan =)
