This may be challenging for beginners. If you think your English is up to snuff, see if you can "decode" the short paragraph below?

"O lny srmat poelpe can raed this. I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd what I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in what oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the oynl iprmoatnt tihng is that the first and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can still raed it wouthit a porbelm. ? This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe. Amzanig huh? Yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!"

Take your time, no rush!

Your post is amazing! That means speed reading is real.

By the way, it is "rghit" not "rgh it".

Only smart people can read this. I couldn’t believe that I could actually understand what I was reading. The phenomenal power of human mind, according to research at Cambridge University, it doesn’t matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Amazing huh? Yeah and I always thought spelling was important.

Interesting topic.

How about doing it in Chinese? Will someone please decipher the 12 characters illustrated in the coin?

Clue: It’s a 4句七言詩!

Good luck my friends!

"Clue: It’s a 4句七言詩!"

Interesting. This is the best I can do:

暗夜橫枕亂心意

長干斷望少八來

壞命到今無口信

斜月四更門半開

Hi Birdman

Good job and well done, pal! Although your attempt differs slightly from the version I have on hand, nevertheless you have got the crux of it all in your answer. Congratulations.

Here is a further clue, ladies and gentlemen, please keep your answers coming.

那4句七言詩還有一個美麗的傳說. 據說古時候, 一男子久出不歸, 其妻獨守空閨, 愁腸千結, 最後想出一計, 托一熟人捎去家書一封. 其夫開看, 信中有12個怪字, 寫的亂七八糟, 一時無法破解. 苦思冥想後, 終於看出原來是4句七言詩. 乃突然悔悟, 星夜趕回, 與妻團聚.

Good luck!

Oh, I forgot, ancient Chinese is read from the right to the left. And I made some revisions. I think this is closer your answer, right?

空夜橫枕浮心意
斜月四更門半開
歹命到今缺口信
肝腸望斷無人來

The only word I can not decipher is "命".

短命 凹命 殘命 缺命 歹命?

None of the above seems to make sense.

Hi again, Birdman

Near perfect!

As you know my knowledge of the Chinese language is very limited. But as I understand it, a 4-line poem normally has the last words of the first, second and fourth lines forming a rhyme. Please correct me if I am wrong.

For example, in the poem "惜牡丹花" by poet Bai Juyi 白居易, the words 丹, 殘 and 看 correspond with one another in terminal sound. In this particular case, the 絕句 conforms strictly to the rules of the match of words, tones, terminal sounds and etcetera. Of course, again, poems written in dialects may not necessarily follow these rules.

惆帳階前紅牡
晚來唯有兩枝
明朝風起應吹盡
夜惜衰紅把火

引文:

birdman 寫道:

None of the above seems to make sense.

The original answer is ‘短命’. And I agree it doesn’t make sense. I would use ‘苦命’. Does it make sense?

Cheers.
