Movie vs. Book

~ Reflecting on the movie "Curse of the Golden Flower" from the Recently Published Book "Princess Makaso" ~

At first, I couldn't understand why the movie "滿城盡帶黃金甲" was translated to "Curse of the Golden Flower" in English. "Golden Flower" literally means golden chrysanthemum ("金黃色" 菊花) in Chinese. It was meant to represent a symbol of royal family in ancient Chinese. In the movie, the flower was used as a secret sign by the Empress (Gong Li) who was portrayed as a lunatic. The Empress's supporters (Imperial Guard) wore golden armor (黃金甲) and a silk scarf embroidered with a chrysanthemum. She planned to take over the Palace on September 9 Festival (九九重陽節) and force the Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) to abdicate his throne.

I saw a new published book online the other day. The name of the book is called "Princess Makaso" by Ben Hills. I am interested in the book and plan to buy it. The cover of the book reminds me that as of today, Japan still preserves many of the ancient traditions and values of the Chinese royal family.
