In 2005, I was sponsored by our Financial Supervisory Commission to study abroad in the Duke University and got a Master Degree of International Public Policy.
Several benefits for me in this regard are as follow:
1. Understand the US’s culture: Privacy and Creation
2. Understand the macro structure of the US’s financial system and its micro operating details
3. Different Methodologies to solve problems
4. Focus on building up technical expertise
5. Gain a greater appreciation from using English punctuation, style, and grammar to clearly express my ideas
6. Be strong (and honest) in time management
7. Speak and write more than one language
8. Be well versed in Excel

張家三兄弟赴美就醫

After a string of media reports about the brothers, more than NT$70 million was raised to help them pay for the surgery. On Wednesday, classmates at Dayi Middle School presented Jhang Jian-syuan with cards, flowers, and origami cranes. He is stricken with ALD and is leaving with his family on Wednesday night to go to the US for a bone marrow transplant.
「 腎上腺腦白質退化症( ALD) 」

The Jhangs are packing for their long trip. In their bags are gifts and charms from well-wishers to help them feel at home during their stay in the US. Friends and family prepared lucky charms for them gathered from temples all over Taiwan, and Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh gave the boys Ultraman action figures to keep them occupied. China Airlines, the carrier that the Jhang family is using for its trip to the US, has made special arrangements for them as well.

There are at least 13 other cases of ALD recognized by the government, but most of the other families haven't received the kind of community support that the Jhangs have. They say, however, that they hope that publicity from the Jhang ALD case will bring about more awareness and understanding of the disease.

my opinions....
This is another good example that media always could draw the public’s attention with certain magic power and do a good job for both the Jhangs and the public. We are happy with the full of the love and help they received from people while I also concern other families have their child stricken with ALD as the report mentioned.

Sometimes I read some tragic stories of families that they could afford the huge number of medical fare and feel like helping those in some ways. I do know that I am so lucky I don’t get in the pool situation like them.

Chicago is known for its wind and cold temperature. It was late October when I arrived and temperature was of course started to drop. Hence, the out door air conditioning. It was a new beginning for me and it was a major turning point of my life. Within the first week of my arrival, I started to go to school, the Lake Zurich Junior High School, I was scared and frighten at the first but a week after, I started to love it like never before! I was able to immediately felt the differences of the education system between US and Taiwan and the major differences are:

1. Unlike teachers in Taiwan, teachers here don't bash and humiliate students, they encourage them.

2. Unlike schools in Taiwan, I was not been punished for what you can't do, I was rewarded for what I can do the best.

3. Unlike schools in Taiwan, I didn't go school from 9am ~ 9pm, I only went to school from 8am ~ 3pm.

4. Unlike schools in Taiwan, I didn't have to memorize things any more, everything here are explained with logical reasons, I was encouraged to think and have my own thought.

5. Unlike schools in Taiwan, I actually liked to go to school and got a balanced between school and life. I enjoyed my life very much and loved every moment of it.

The dark cloud started to fad away and the sun shine was starting to return back to my life. It was a whole new world and it was beautiful. Oh… and by the way, I was very surprised when I saw squirrels running around the school campus! That is something you don't see on school campus in Taiwan!

Of course, everything has its pro and con. Nothing is perfect. Just when I thought the bad time is over and good time is to come, I started to face other great challenges in life during my teenage years and I will not blog about it in this article, that will be the part III , but the challenges combined with the fact that I live on this land of opportunities gave me the chance to react well and to improve myself. I am been giving the chance to constantly exploring myself and learning my capabilities.

When I graduated from the high school, I received two metals and one certificate: a metal for been the United Stated Tennis Association Maryland all-star tennis player awarded by US Congress Senator from Maryland, Paul Sarbanes, a metal for the good academic standing (GPA above 3.5) and a certificate from Bill Clinton, who is at the time, the President of United States of America for the great academic achievement! Would I be able to achieve all these if I was to stayed in Taiwan?
